We Like Housesitting!

Our important news is we are now at 85% of our monthly support pledged, and we can register for MTI!  We are very excited.  We’re registering for the next open session (in January 2014), but we’ll be on the wait lists for the four remaining sessions in 2013.  And we told them we’re available for last minute openings.

The funny part is that God has raised our support from 67% to 85% while we have been housesitting for nine days.

We moved back home today, but if our support stalls again, maybe we should look for another housesitting gig?

MTI: Our Next Step

“When are you going?” is by far the most common question we are asked.  Unfortunately we don’t have a good answer.

  • “Only God knows” (true but sounds flip)
  • “I wish I knew” (sounds complaining)
  • “Maybe this summer/fall/winter/spring” –fill in any season and we’ve said it!  (sounds like we can’t make up our minds)

The real answer, of course, is, “When our support is raised.”

MTI

Although we don’t know when, we do know where we will go first:  Colorado Springs and a four-week intensive training in cross-cultural adjustment and language acquisition.  Missionary Training International (mti.org) has 60 years of experience in preparing cross-cultural workers for life abroad.

Attending MTI marks the beginning of our service as HCJB Global missionaries.  After MTI we’ll head for Costa Rica and six to eight months of Spanish language school, and then to Quito.

Just another $229/month…

To register for MTI we must have 80% of our monthly support pledged, which (as of May 23) is another $229 a month in pledges.  This could be:

  • Three $80/month pledges, or
  • Six $40/month pledges, or
  • Twelve $20/month pledges, or
  • Twenty-three $10/month pledges

Each pledge, whatever the amount, moves us toward MTI.  We are ready and eager to go, and are closing in on our goal.

Will you consider joining with us in extending God’s blessing to the unreached and less fortunate?  Click on one of the two “Donate” links on this page and help us get on our way.  Thank you!

Chasing the Wild Goose

Wild Goose Chase-1

My friend Julie tucked this book into my bag after church when I (Jody) was deep in conversation with someone else.  Scott caught sight of the title and joked, “I hope that’s not prophetic about our future!”  I smiled my thanks to Julie and thought, “When am I going to read that?  I have NO spare time.”

But a week and a half later, a meeting was cancelled and I had an unexpected hour.  I had been very anxious that morning at all the uncertainties in our lives.  My emotional roller coaster felt very out-of-control.  So, I picked up the book and took a break.

On page two this paragraph jumped out at me:

A part of us feels as if something is spiritually wrong with us if we experience circumstantial uncertainty.  But that is precisely what Jesus promised us when we are born of His spirit and start following Him (John 3:8). Most of us will have no idea where we are going most of the time.  And I know that is unsettling.  But circumstantial uncertainty also goes by another name:  adventure.

Well!  Hmmm.  Adventures ARE supposed to be unpredictable and uncertain, aren’t they?  It’s normal to feel unsettled and sometimes terrified.  My part is to trust God and enjoy the ride, ignoring the inner voice that protests, “But I don’t know what is going to happen!”

Romans 8:15 says it well:  “This resurrection life you received from God is…adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?”

The book’s title comes from the Celtic Christians’ name for the Holy Spirit:  a wild goose.  Batterson writes wisely and well, and I was greatly encouraged and challenged.

Here’s one more gem (on page 58):

The key to spiritual growth is developing healthy and whole routines.  We call them spiritual disciplines.  But once the routine becomes routine, we need to disrupt it.  Why?  Because sacred routines become empty rituals when we do them out of left-brain memory instead of right-brain imagination….One of the greatest dangers we face spiritually is learning how and forgetting why.

Three Generations

Pura Vida with Lorena Escobar

Radio HCJB

“My mother told me they heard the news of the second world war because of HCJB.  My grandfather listened every day.  We love HCJB!”

HCJB are the call letters of radio station HCJB, a ministry of HCJB Global.  As the first Christian missionary radio station in the world, it has been broadcasting since 1931.

The comments in the first paragraph came via a friend at our church from her Ecuadorean daughter-in-law in Quito, Ecuador.  Before our friend had heard of our missionary assignment, her daughter-in-law had told her of HCJB and how she listens and enjoys it.  She’s the third generation in her family to listen to HCJB!

Recently at church we met an immigrant from Ecuador who was born in HCJB Global’s Quito hospital.  She was excited when she heard of our plans:  “My father became a follower of Christ through HCJB.  How wonderful that you are going to help the Ecuadorean people!”

HVQ - Intensive Care Unit

Hospital Vozandes Quito ICU

HCJB Global is much bigger now than the small radio station started in Quito in 1931.  Health care joined their media activities, and their ministries expanded around the world.  Yet to the people of Ecuador, they are still “Vozandes” (The Voice of the Andes) and held in great favor.

And we are excited to help be the voice and hands of Jesus–via accounting and clerical work–to a third (and fourth) generation of Ecuadoreans.

Friend Raising

Friend Raising

For me (Jody), the most thought-provoking part of this excellent book was the chapter on generosity.  The author quotes Earl Pitts, a Canadian YWAM worker:  “The Kingdom of God’s system of finances is giving and receiving.  The world’s system is buying and selling.”  Key aspects of buying and selling are control and independence.  “We keep our resources to ourselves and exchange with reciprocity, a measured transaction of equal value.”

Buying and selling isn’t bad–it’s a necessary part of life.  But as Christians we are to give preference to giving and receiving. The economy of giving and receiving begins with God, who gives us the free gift of salvation.  All that we have comes from His hand.  We can never earn or pay back His grace.  In response, we are to give generously to others without expecting something in return.  We are also to receive graciously from others that which we haven’t earned and can’t pay back.

I struggle much more with the receiving than the giving.  Receiving is very humbling and challenging, especially when I know the giver has sacrificed to give.  I lose my independence and control.   The economy of the Kingdom of God does not feel very comfortable when I’m on the receiving end.

I don’t know why God has me struggling with this right now, but I can think of some possibilities:

  • to drive me deeper into the reality of God’s grace and provision–do I really accept how dependent I am on Him?
  • to teach me about interdependence and community
  • to create compassion for the recipients of my giving–to understand that they may feel a loss of control and independence too, especially if they have little opportunity to give to others
  • to prepare me for our service in Ecuador when our livelihood will depend on others donating to HCJB Global for our ministry

I don’t have any answers yet–I’ll be chewing on this for awhile.  I have a feeling, though, that God is pushing us to stake our future on His faithfulness–to trust the economic dynamics of His kingdom.

(Both quotes are from Friend Raising: Building a Missionary Support Team That Lasts, Betty Barnett, YWAM Publishing: 1991, p. 39.)

“Perspectives”

PerspectivesScott and I (Jody) are taking a 15 week class called Perspectives on the World Christian Movement.  This interesting and challenging class consists of a wide variety of readings and in-person presentations, usually by experienced missionaries.

My favorite essay thus far is “Beyond Duty” by Tim Dearborn.  Dearborn describes the discouragement and exhaustion Christians can experience when we focus on the many needs in the world.  We may hear the message as, “I bring you bad news of sad problems.”

Here’s my favorite quote:

It is insufficient to proclaim that the Church of God has a mission in the world.  Rather the God of mission has a Church in the world.  Grasp this inversion of subject and object, and participation in God’s mission will become a joyous, life-giving privilege.  Miss it, and mission involvement will eventually degenerate into a wearisome, overwhelming duty.

This kind of fatigue is real.  We have felt it, and we’ve heard it from others.  I want to change my focus from the bad news to the good news:  the God of mission has a Church in the world.  We get to join God in what He is already doing to reach people everywhere with His ever-expanding Kingdom.  As our local pastor recently said, “It’s the difference between using the power of a wave to surf, and paddling upstream on the McKenzie River.”

“Beyond Duty,” Tim Dearborn in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement, Fourth Edition, edited by Ralph D. Winter and Steven C. Hawthorne, 2009, p. 70.

One-Third!

Word came this afternoon of our 33rd pledge. This puts us past the one-third mark:  35% of our monthly support is now pledged!  Yea, God!

AND our start-up expenses are now 58% funded!

Although we still have a long way to go, it’s good to celebrate the small victories.  Thank you for your encouragement, prayers, support, and even a few cheers.
